Driver who killed teen sues for damage

MADRID, Spain—A speeding motorist who killed a teenage cyclist is suing the boy's parents over damage to his luxury car, the government says.

Enaitz Iriondo, 17, died instantly in August 2004 when businessman Tomas Delgado's Audi A8 crashed into him at 100 mph near Haro in northern Spain, an Interior Ministry traffic report said. The speed limit was 55 mph.

Iriondo was not wearing reflective clothing or a helmet, the ministry report said. As the sun had set when he crossed the path of Delgado's car from a side road, a regional court found both parties at fault and closed the case, the report said.

Delgado, whose insurance company paid Iriondo's parents $48,500 in compensation for their son's life, filed a suit in late 2006 to recover $29,400 in damages to his car and car rental costs, the ministry traffic report said.

"It's the only way I have to claim my money back," Delgado was quoted as saying by the newspaper El Pais, which first reported the story on Friday. El Pais said a ruling was expected next week.

Iriondo's parents were shocked.

"It's the final straw, a stab in the back," Iriondo's mother, Rosa Trinidad said, according to El Pais. "Before the lawsuit we thought the poor guy would find it hard to live the rest of his life with the thought of having caused our son's death.

The European Union's statistics office says Spain recorded 113 traffic fatalities per million inhabitants in 2004. The average for the 25-nation bloc was 95. In 2006, 3,016 people died on Spain's roads.

Some ads were framed positively:

Others were framed negatively:

"Don't get stuck at home!" and

Consumers who were planning a last minute trip were willing to pay $178 more for a vacation, on average, when presented with a "negative" ad as opposed to a "positive" ad.

Conversely, those who were planning a trip that was still a ways off responded to the positive ads and were willing to pay $165 more for a promotion-framed vacation than a prevention-framed vacation.

What does that all mean for you and me? Well, faced with having to make an imminent purchase, consumers are confronted with the possibility that they may not fulfil their purchasing goal (a romantic Valentine's evening).

A product is then offered not to achieve something (romance) but to avoid something (fight). So when put under a time constraint, we the consumer are more motivated to purchase a product that helps achieve the minimal goal of preventing a negative outcome (a fight) than they are to purchase a product that helps achieve the maximal goal of promoting a positive outcome (romance).

It would seem then that the closer we are to the (gift giving) time we are more likely to purchase a product that is "not bad" rather than a product that is "good."

Let me start off by saying that I was extremely cautious about buying something off of the internet to help improve my brother-in-laws (BIL) golf swing especially as it was a Christmas Present. And the title, "The Simple Golf Swing"? But then he’s just my BIL!

2008 Will Be My Year

As many of my readers will know I’m a big fan of the internet, if only because it provides my living, and a growing one at that.

Since going live I’ve made many friends online and one question I keep getting asked is: 

How do you do it?

Another popular question is:

Can you suggest how I might start building an online business?

I have no product of my own that will do that for friends and over the past number of years I’ve
been busy building my own business and haven’t had the time to spend on designing, testing, and
promoting my own product. Maybe some day but not just now.

Yet because I’m making money I feel I own it to give something back and that’s really what I’m going
to be doing over the next few weeks – giving back.

I don’t know of any other business that you can spend two or three hours a day working and decide
to go on holiday at any time of the year and be reasonably sure that your business will keep
making you money while you are away enjoying yourself as this online world we live in. 

The potential is so great I can quite easily share my ideas with people all over the globe and
know that if they put into operation what I’m suggesting will do me little harm. 

Can you name another business like it? Thought not.

That’s the reason why I am personally going "full-speed ahead" in this coming year.

I'm only going to be focus on building this business.

Everything I've done so far in this business has truly been "part time."
And sometimes I felt like I have been neglecting it so much so that it felt more like "sometime" or
"whenever I feel like it."

Yet it still makes me a good week’s wage.

But all that's going to change in a BIG way in 2008.

Sending A Valentine's E-Card

Sending an e-card for special occasions like the one coming up, Valentine's Day, doesn't have to mean a) you couldn't get to the store on time, b) you're too cheap to spend $1.99+ on some sappy, uninspired, cheesy greeting, or c) you never update your snail mail address book list and have lost all those return envelopes.

No, it could mean that you care about the earth and don't want to add to the paper in landfills, and that you're all about creating "custom" messages when store bought won't do. Yeah, that's it.

Well, if you haven't noticed, the inspiration is lacking in 99% of the e-card sites out there. We've weeded through all the junk to help you create some of the best e-cards around.

Rattlebox - Rattlebox is really very good. They have great designs, the interface is nicely designed and the themes themselves are actually decent. You can can change all or some of the text to customize the card, and embed video cards on social networking sites, blogs, etc.

Hipster cards - another witty, well designed e-card site that you would actually want to use. Please note there are some off color options so we're going to note it as - NSFW.

Someecards - their tag line is "when you care enough to hit send." These cards are pen and ink and have funny one liners.

MushyGushy - card site where you can upload you head shot into different animated themes (think JibJab) customize, and send.

Smilebox - site where you choose from various multimedia designs and personalize with photos, video, music, words, and style and share via email, blog, or print.

delivr - send a personalized postcard from photos from your Flickr account or select from the 3 million or so Dlivr offers using the Flickr API to pull back the most interesting photos with an appropriate creative commons license.

meish.org - for the anti-valentine crowd. If you hate satin bears and VD makes you want to hurl these non-sentimental e-cards will fit the bill for you. Oh and are they funny.

That's the extent of our list but not for lack of trying. We specifically avoided the usual suspects, like American Greetings, and any site with animated gifs. If you have a favorite site you'd like to throw in the mix, please send it in.

A Valentine Legend

One of the most popular Valentine stories takes place during the third century in Rome. The ruling Emperor Claudius II had decided single men made better soldiers, and outlawed marriage so he could build a better crop of soldiers. A young priest by the name of Valentine defied the decree, and continued to marry young lovers in secret, and when Claudius discovered this he ordered that Valentine be put to death. It was for this act that Valentine was recognized as a Christian martyr.

Legend goes on the suggest that Valentine actually sent the first valentine. According to legend he had fallen in love with the daughter of the senior prison card and knowing he was about the be executed sent her a card saying ‘I will love you till I die.’

Valentine messages have come a long way since then for according to Hallmark 192 mikllion Valentine’s Day Cards were sent last year!

Believe It Or Not

I meet an old acquaintance earlier on today and he told me he was getting married.

“Congratulations,” I said, “Do I know her?”

“Probably not,” came the reply.

Of course all the appropriate questions were asked: how long have you known each other, where did you meet, when did you propose, etc., etc.

Anyway shortly before Christmas Derry City, Ireland made an attempt on the largest number of Santa Clauses in one spot (they beat the previous record by 3000+!).

So my friend travelled to Derry and made arrangements to propose to his girl in the Mayors parlour in front of all the world’s photographers; both he and the girl dressed in their Santa Clause outfits.

A Thought For The Day

Hi Guys

Wow, there is a LOT going on the home front right now. I’m building a kind of Granny Flat for my mother, she has pretty severe arthritis and I want to move her down stairs. Workmen are all over the place today. My access to the computer, and hence my business, was greatly hampered to day. But for my mother it is well worth it.

It is great you know been able to work at home, but it’s not all it’s cracked up to be: you still have to put in the hours – but they are less and you can spread them out. What I like about it best of all is you are not tied to the clock.

The US Primary Elections

Maybe it’s because I’m Irish but I’m watching with interest the US Primary Elections. Now I have to confess that I don’t understand how these Primaries work so maybe some of my American cousins will give me the idiots guide to the primaries.

If I were an American who would I vote for – I think it would have to be Hillary if only because of the work she and her husband done here in Ireland. We own them a great big thank you.

I was thinking of sending Bill a copy of an e-book I’m promoting at the moment ‘500 Lovemaking Tips & Secrets,’ but then he doesn’t need to read the book – but you might fancy taking a look at my Review!

One thing that does disappoint me is that race seems to rising its ugly head – is it really that big of an issue, I certainly hope not.

Valentines Love Cake

1 pk Fudge marble cake mix
2 lb Ricotta cheese
1 c Sugar
4 Eggs
1 ts Vanilla
8 oz Whipping cream
1 pk Instant chocolate pudding
1 c Milk

Mix cake as directed on box.

Pour into greased and floured 9 x 13 pan.

In separate bowl, combine ricotta, sugar, eggs and vanilla; mix well.

Spoon mixture over top of unbaked cake.

Bake at 350 degrees for about an hour. Cool.

Mix pudding with milk; fold in whipped topping.

Spread over cake

Saint Valentine's Day or Valentine's Day is a holiday on February 14. It is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other; sending Valentine's cards, donating to charity or gifting candy. A common present on Valentine's Day is a gift of flowers

Valentine's Day derived its name from two men, both Christian martyrs among the numerous Early Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.

Since the 19th century, the practice of giving handwritten notes has largely given way to mass-produced greeting cards.

The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately one billion valentines are sent each year worldwide, making the day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year behind Christmas. The association estimates that women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines.

Cupid, another symbol of the holiday, became associated with Valentine's Day because he was the son of Venus, the Roman god of love and beauty. Cupid often appears on Valentine cards.

What Causes Acne?

What is acne?

Acne is a disorder that causes outbreaks of skin lesions commonly called pimples. It is caused by the skin’s oil glands making too much sebum, an oily substance, which leads to plugged pores. It also can be caused by the rapid production of a bacteria P. acnes.

Acne lesions occur mostly on the face, neck, back, chest, and shoulders. It is the most common skin disease. Although acne is not a serious health threat, severe acne can lead to disfiguring and permanent scarring.

How does acne affect women?

Most young women and men will have at least a few pimples over the course of their lives. But acne seems to affect men and women in different ways. Young men are more likely to have a more serious form of acne. Acne in young women tends to be more random and linked to hormone changes, such as the menstrual cycle.

As women get older, acne often gets better. But some women have acne for many years. Some women even get acne for the first time at age 30 or 40.

For many women, acne can be an upsetting illness. Women may have feelings of depression, poor body image, or low self-esteem. But you don’t have to wait to outgrow acne or to let it run its course. Today, almost every case of acne can be resolved. Acne also can, sometimes, be prevented. Talk with your doctor or dermatologist (a doctor who specializes in treating skin problems) about how you can help prevent acne and if treatment would help you.

What are the different types of acne lesions?

• Comedo (whiteheads or blackheads) or papules. The comedo is the basic acne lesion, which is a plugged pore. If the plugged pore stays under the skin, it’s called a closed comedo and forms a white bump or whitehead. Blackheads are comedos that open up and appear blackish on the surface of the skin. This black color is not due to dirt, but because the air reacts with the excess oil.
• Pustules or pimples. Pustules or pimples are acne lesions that contain pus and are red at the base.
• Nodules. These are more serious acne lesions. They lodge deeper in the skin, are painful, and can cause scarring.
• Cysts. Like nodules, these lesions are deep within in the skin, are painful, and are filled with pus, and can cause scarring.

What triggers acne in women?

Many things can trigger acne in women:

• Hormone changes during puberty. During puberty, girls have an increase in male sex hormones called androgens. This increase causes the glands to get larger and make more sebum.
• Hormone changes as an adult. The menstrual cycle is one of the most common acne triggers. Acne lesions tend to form a few days before the cycle begins and go away after the cycle is completed. Other hormone changes, such as pregnancy and menopause, improve acne in some women. But some women have worse acne during these times. Stopping use of birth control pills can play a role as well.
• Medicines. Certain medicines, such as those used to treat epilepsy and types of depression.
• Make-up.
• Pressure or friction on the skin. Friction caused by bike helmets or backpacks can make acne worse.
• Family history. If other people in your family have acne, there is a greater chance you will have it.

Does poor hygiene cause acne?

It is a myth that women get acne because they don’t wash enough. Too much washing or scrubbing the skin harshly can make acne worse. And washing away surface oils doesn’t do much to prevent or cure acne, because it forms under the skin. The best way to clean the face is to gently wash it twice a day with a mild soap or cleanser. Be careful to remove make-up without harsh scrubbing.

Can stress cause acne?

Stress does not cause acne. But, acne may be a side effect of some medicines used to treat stress or depression. And in some cases, the social and emotional impact of acne lesions causes stress. Talk with your doctor if you have concerns.

Can eating chocolate or greasy foods cause acne?

While many women feel that eating chocolate or greasy foods causes acne, experts have not found a link between the diet and acne. Foods seem to have little effect on acne in most people. But, it’s important to eat a healthy diet for good health.

How is acne treated?
